10 Best Up And Coming Stocks To Own For 2015

Alamy Nothing in life is perfect. But when it comes to investment accounts, Roth individual retirement accounts and Roth 401(k) plans are as close as it gets. Roth 401(k) plans offer a combination of benefits and options that is unavailable with any other investment account type. There are at least seven reasons why you need a beg your employer to offer one, if it doesn't have one in place. 1. Tax-Free Withdrawals in Retirement With a regular 401(k) plan, all the good news on income taxes happens on the front end. You get to deduct the amount of your contribution from your taxable income for each year that you put money into the account. That lowers your income tax liability each year that you make a contribution. That arrangement works especially well if you're currently in a high tax bracket. The theory on tax deferral is that you take the tax break now -- when you're in a high tax bracket -- then withdraw the money in retirement, when presumably you'll be a lower bracket. Save big now, pay small later -- fair enough. But where a regular 401(k) is concerned, you're merely deferring your tax liability, not eliminating it. Since your contributions to the plan were tax-deductible when made, and since all investment earnings accumulated in the account since inception have been tax-deferred, any and all withdrawals taken during retirement will be subject to income tax.

A Roth 401(k) is a remedy to this dilemma.

Africa Studio/Shutterstock A recent class-action lawsuit accuses some of the biggest names in the deodorant business of selling deodorants as "unscented" when they really had a fragrance. "Unscented" deodorants are marketed to consumers who have sensitivity to smells and often also note they are hypoallergenic. The companies, the lawsuit alleges, should have known that the products they were selling had distinctive odors and were hardly "unscented" while consumers based their purchasing decisions on misleading labels. Among the brands named in the lawsuit as containing fragrance: Arm & Hammer, Secret, Dry Idea, Ban, Mitchum. The companies named as defendants include Church & Dwight (CHD), Procter & Gamble (PG), Dial, Henkel (HENKY) and Revlon (REV). Ingredients That Smell The lawsuit filed by Philadelphia lawyer Mark L. Rhoades accuses the companies of sealing the products so well that no consumer could tell at the store the deodorants are scented. The labeling, however, states that there is no scent even though the ingredients include chemicals with fragrances, according to the lawsuit. As an example, the lawsuit noted that Secret Outlast includes "fragrance" on its ingredients list. Arm & Hammer Essentials contains "citrus aurantium dulcis (orange) peel oil", "anthemis nobilis (chamomile) flower oil", "coriandrum sativum (coriander) fruit oil" and "pelargonium graveolens geranium) flower oil." That all adds up to an unmistakable citrus odor, the lawsuit alleged. Because each purchase is relatively inexpensive, the lawsuit maintains that individual consumers, for the most part, don't bother going back to a store to seek a refund after realizing their "unscented" deodorants have a scent. So, the lawsuit is being brought on behalf of anyone who has purchased one of these deodorants that claims to be unscented while having a distinct odor. The lawsuit -- Melissa Fogarty v. Church & Dwight et al., case number 3:14-cv-07086 -- was filed i

Phosphorescent Organic Light Emitting Diode Technologies

Phosphorescent OLEDs utilize specialized materials and device structures that allow OLEDs to emit light through a process known as phosphorescence. Traditional fluorescent OLEDs emit light through an inherently less efficient process. Theory and experiment show that phosphorescent OLEDs exhibit device efficiencies up to four times higher than those exhibited by fluorescent OLEDs. Phosphorescence substantially reduces the power requirements of an OLED and is potentially useful in displays for hand-held devices, such as Smartphone, where battery power is often a limiting factor. Phosphorescence is also important for area displays such as televisions, where higher device efficiency and lower heat generation may enable longer ! product lifetimes and increased energy efficiency.

Additional Proprietary Organic Light Emitting Diode Technologies

Additional OLED Technologies include FOLED Flexible OLEDs, Thin-Film Encapsulation, UniversalP2OLED Printable Phosphorescent OLEDs, OVJP Organic Vapor Jet Printing, OVPD Organic Vapor Phase Deposition and TOLED Transparent OLEDs. The Company is working on a number of technologies required for the fabrication of OLEDs on flexible substrates. As of December 31, 2012, it was conducting research and development on FOLED technologies internally, under several of its United States government programs and in connection with the government-sponsored Flexible Display Center at Arizona State University (ASU). The Company announced its, patented encapsulation technology for the packaging of flexible OLEDs and other thin-film devices, as well as for use as a barrier film for plastic substrates. Its approach for manufacturing a small molecule OLED, including a PHOLED, is based on a vacuum thermal evaporation (VTE) process.

The Company has partnered with Aixtron AG, which is a manufacturer of metal-organic chemical vapor deposition equipment, to develop and qualify equipment for the fabrication of OLED displays utilizing the OVPD process. It has developed a technology for the fabrication of OLEDs that have transparent cathodes. TOLEDs use a transparent cathode and either a transparent, reflective or opaque metal anode.

In a perfect world stocks would move in predictable, manageable ways. We don't live - nor do we trade in - a perfect world. In the real world we have to adapt to and deal with the curve balls the market throws us, and there are no two stocks that illustrate that point better than Document Security Systems, Inc. (NYSEMKT:DSS) and Nortech Systems Incorporated (NASDAQ:NSYS) to today. While both NSYS and DSS are up today, one's overbought and ripe for a pullback, while the other is likely at the beginning of a trade-worthy rally.

Document Security Systems (DSS) is engaged in fraud and counterfeit protection for all forms of printed documents and digital information. This stock closed up 8.7% to $1.68 in Tuesday's trading session.

    Tuesday's Range: $1.48-$1.68

    52-Week Range: $1.37-$4.60

    Tuesday's Volume: 755,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 472,073

From a technical perspective, DSS ripped higher here right above some near-term support at $1.45 with above-average volume. This stock has been downtrending badly for the last three months, with shares dropping from its high of $3.64 to its recent low of $1.37. During that move, shares of DSS have been making mostly lower highs and lower lows, which is bearish technical price action. That said, shares of DSS have now started to rebound off that $1.37 low and it's now quickly moving within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if DSS manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance levels at $1.75 to $1.88 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in DSS as long as it's trending above some near-term support levels at $1.45 to $1.37 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 472,073 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then DSS will set up to re-test or possibly take out its 50-day moving average at $2.05 to its next major resistance area at $2.30. Any high-volume move above those levels will then put its 200-day at $2.39 or $3 into range for shares of DSS.

Tax Day freebies get goofier this year

Here's a Tax Day stumper: Would you rather pay your taxes — or eat a cookie?

Pay your taxes — or get a massage?

Pay your taxes — or sing for your supper?

Oops. Did we forget to mention that on April 15, these all will be free?

Tax Day means lots of things to lots of people, but to most folks it means giving, not receiving. Which may explain why a parade of companies have embraced Tax Day freebies, deals and promos. To brands looking for a star on which to hitch their marketing wagon, almost nothing could be easier than this. "Everyone hates sending money to the government," says brand guru Allen Adamson. But everyone loves free stuff. "It's a theme that unifies." And, just as important, he says, tends to drive social media buzz. Which may help explain this Tax Day loot:

• Free dinner. Got a song in your heart? Perform a complete song between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. local time on the live music stage at one of 40 Hard Rock Cafes on Tax Day — and you've just sung your way into a free entree. The chain expects to give away "thousands" of entrees valued at up to $14.95 each, says John Galloway, chief marketing officer.

• Free cookies. For those with a bitter taste after filing their taxes, Great American Cookies has a sweet reward — a freebie chocolate chip cookie. OK, the limit is one per person. But no purchase is required, notes Vice President David Kaiser, "nor proof of completed taxes."

• Free massage. You need to sign up in advance, but free mini-massages are on tap April 14 through 18 at participating HydroMassage locations. Since the tradition began six years ago, the chain has given away almost 500,000 free massages "in this traditionally stressful time of year," says Paul Lunter, president.

• Free shredding. For those with super-secret tax documents to shred, folks who print special Office Depot coupons can shred up to 5 pounds of papers between now and April 29.

• Free sandwich. Well, there's a Tax Day catch to getti! ng a free sandwich (The Original) at Schlotzsky's — you have to buy a 32-ounce drink and a bag of chips. But, hey, that's a pretty small price to pay for deli sandwich.

• Free fries. Arby's will hand out snack-sized curly fries free on April 15 for guests with coupons from Arbys.com or Arby's social channels. But you won't be able to print the coupons until April 14.

• Free chips and dip. At California Tortilla, you can get free chips and queso dip on Tuesday but only if you tell your server these secret passwords: "Taxes Shmaxes."

A fabulous year for stock mutual funds

NEW YORK (AP) — It was easy to make money with mutual funds last year, as long as you picked ones focused on stocks.

Stock markets around the world surged in 2013, from New York to Frankfurt to Tokyo, and that helped lift all flavors of stock mutual funds. The market's ascent spread across not only geographies but also industries. That meant everything from high-flying technology stock funds to stereotypically dowdy utility stock funds rose. As long as investors held onto their stock funds through the year - and resisted the temptation to sell at each blip of concern - they enjoyed the best returns in a decade for many funds.

Out of nearly 3,650 stock funds tracked by Morningstar, 92% rose over 2013. But funds that focus on bonds struggled, many of them after years of solid performance. Here's a look at some of the trends that shaped the year for mutual-fund investors:

Best Valued Stocks To Buy For 2016

— Portfolio managers with passports were popular. The U.S. stock market surged to a record high in 2013, but investors put more money into funds that invest in stocks outside the U.S. During November alone, investors poured $1.72 billion into the Vanguard Total International Stock Index fund (VGTSX), for example. Its biggest investments include Nestle of Switzerland and Samsung Electronics of South Korea.

Through the year's first 11 months, investors plugged a net $129.38 billion into world stock mutual funds, according to the most recent data from the Investment Company Institute. That's nearly five times the $27.15 billion that they put into funds focused on just U.S. stocks.

The moves are part of a long-term migration investors are undertaking as they make their portfolios look more like the world's: Stocks outside the U.S. make up more than half the world's total by market value. Plus, foreign stocks sometimes zig when U.S. stocks zag. By adding foreign stocks, the thinking g! oes, a portfolio becomes more diversified.

— The dollar's moves matter. Many headlines trumpeted the 56.7% surge for Japan's Nikkei 225 index last year. That beat the 29.6% rise for the Standard & Poor's 500 index of U.S. stocks. But many U.S. investors in Japanese stock funds didn't feel the full benefit. That's because the Nikkei rose 56.7% in Japanese yen terms. When converted into dollars, the performance wasn't as good, and Japanese stock mutual funds returned an average of 26.7% last year, including dividends. That's less than the S&P 500.

It's a result of the yen's value dropping steadily through the year against the dollar. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has championed big stimulus efforts to jolt the world's third-largest economy. One dollar bought 105 yen at the end of 2013, up from 87 yen at the start of the year.

Some mutual funds try to blunt the effect of shifting currency values in a process called hedging. But many funds don't hedge against currency moves, saying it's too unpredictable or too expensive to do so.

— Health care funds took the lead. Health care stock funds returned an average of 48.2% last year. That beat everything from technology stock funds (an average gain of 35.5%) to financial stock funds (34.6%). To see why, look at the holdings of the Franklin Biotechnology Discovery fund (FBDIX), which led the way with a 68.6% surge in 2013.

The fund keeps about a fifth of its portfolio in just two stocks: Gilead Sciences and Celgene. Both more than doubled in 2013 amid an explosion of interest in the biotech industry.

— Small was big. Some of the best returns in 2013 came from mutual funds that focus on the smallest stocks. Small-cap growth stock funds jumped an average of 40.9%, for example. Managers of these funds focus on stocks with market values closer to $300 million, like 1-800-Flowers.com, than those worth a total of $300 billion, like Microsoft. Large-cap growth funds returned an average of 33.9%.

Small stocks su! rged more! than the rest of the market amid excitement that their earnings can grow faster. Smaller companies tend to get more of their revenue from customers in the U.S. than big multinational companies do, and the U.S. economy looks to be in better shape than many others. The unemployment rate fell last month to a five-year low, and the Federal Reserve has seen enough improvement that it is slowing its bond-buying program meant to stimulate the economy. To be sure, the gains for small-cap stocks have been so great that some fund managers are worried that they've become too expensive.

— Emerging downers. Not all stock mutual funds rose. Many of those that focus on China, Brazil and other emerging markets fell, with the average emerging-markets stock fund down 0.1%. Latin American stock funds fell 12%.

Worries about slower economic growth hurt, as did concerns that foreign investors will pull out of developing economies amid a slowdown in stimulus from the Federal Reserve.

— Many bond funds struggled. For years, investors looked to bond mutual funds for a safe way to avoid the whipsaws of the stock market. During 2008, when the S&P 500 lost 37% amid the financial crisis, intermediate-term bond funds lost an average of just 4.7%.

But last year, bond funds were a big source of fear. Investors yanked a net $57.92 billion from bond funds through the first 11 months of 2013. It's a sharp turnaround from 2012, when they deposited a net total of $303.6 billion into bond funds.

Investors were worried about the threat of rising interest rates, which hurt bond prices. When rates rise, it suddenly makes the lower yields paid by older bonds less attractive. That means prices for them drop, hurting the returns for the bond mutual funds that own them. The yield on the 10-year Treasury rose from a low of about 1.6% in May to 3% at the end of 2013.

Intermediate-bond funds are the biggest category of bond funds, with $935 billion in total assets, according to Morningstar. They lost an a! verage of! 1.4% in 2013.

— A good rotation. Many experts predicted a "great rotation" in 2013, where investors would dump bonds en masse and move money into stocks. A shift did occur, but many fund managers say the magnitude doesn't yet qualify as "great."

Some types of bond mutual funds were still able to attract money through 2013, even with the worries about rising rates. That's because some funds are better able to tolerate rising interest rates. Bank-loan funds, for example, own loans whose interest rates can rise and fall with the broad market. Investors flocked to them last year and deposited a net $58 billion through the year's first 11 months. That helped the category's assets nearly double from a year earlier to $135 billion.

Top 10 Regional Bank Companies To Watch In Right Now: Pain Therapeutics Inc (PTIE)

Pain Therapeutics, Inc., incorporated in May 1998, is a biopharmaceutical company that develops drugs. The Company has four drug candidates in clinical programs, including REMOXY, abuse-resistant hydromorphone, abuse-resistant hydrocodone and a radio-labeled monoclonal antibody to treat metastatic melanoma. It is also working on a new treatment for patients with hemophilia. The Company lead drug candidate is REMOXY, which is a painkiller. It has collaboration agreement with King Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (King) develops and commercializes REMOXY and other opioid painkillers. The Company and King jointly managed a Phase III clinical program and New Drug Application (NDA) submission for REMOXY. It is also developing a pipeline of drug candidates in the area of oncology and hematology. It owns all commercial rights to its pipeline of drug candidates in oncology and hematology. As of December 31, 2010, the Company leased approximately 30,700 square feet of space in San Mateo, California and all of its operations are located in San Mateo.

REMOXY

REMOXY is a controlled-release oral capsule form of oxycodone in a highly viscous liquid formulation matrix that includes excipients. It is formulated to help address issues of abuse and misuse of time-release oxycodone tablets. REMOXY capsule dosage form provides therapeutic drug levels of oxycodone on a twice-daily dosing schedule, while resisting the rapid increases in plasma levels of oxycodone associated with common methods of abuse and misuse. Its formulation also resists delivery by unapproved routes of administration, such as injection, snorting or inhalation.

Metastatic Melanoma

The Company is developing a drug candidate called PTI-188 to treat metastatic melanoma, a form of skin cancer. PTI-188 is a monoclonal antibody linked to a radioisotope, intended to deliver doses of radiation lethal to melanoma tumors without harming normal tissue. In March 2010, the Company announced data from two open-label! , dose-escalating Phase I studies conducted in Israel to assess the safety, pharmacokinetics, dosimetry and anti-tumor activity of PTI-188. During the year ended December 31, 2010, the second study was completed. The technology used in this program was developed at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine (AECOM). It had licensed worldwide commercial rights to this technology from AECOM.

Hemophilia

The Company has a gene transfer program, initially developed at Stanford University, focused at correcting a genetic disorder in which patients are unable to stop bleeding. The Company has licensed worldwide commercial rights to the technology used in this program from Poetic Genetics, LLC (Poetic).

Other product candidates

The Company alliance with King includes development of three other abuse-resistant opioid product candidates: hydromorphone, hydrocodone and oxymorphone. Its abuse-resistant formulations of hydromorphone and hydrocodone have completed Phase I clinical trials. In January 2011, the Company announced that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had accepted its investigational IND, for abuse-resistant oxymorphone.

The Company competes with Roxane Laboratories, Purdue Pharma, King Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Abbott Laboratories, Cephalon, Endo Pharmaceuticals, Teva Pharmaceuticals, Elkins-Sinn, Watson Laboratories, Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical and Forest Pharmaceuticals.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Sean Williams]

However, all isn't well when it comes to the future of abuse-resistant painkiller Remoxy, which was developed by Pain Therapeutics (NASDAQ: PTIE  ) , using Durect'sspecial technology-based gel capsule to prevent abuse, and is licensed by Pfizer (NYSE: PFE  ) . Remoxy has been rejected twice by the FDA -- the most recent coming in mid-2011 -- and Pfizer commented this morning that if it were to seek reapproval for the drug it wouldn't be for at least two more years. Given Pfizer's extensive product pipeline, losing Remoxy wouldn't be a big deal. For micro-cap clinical-stage companies like Pain Therapeutics and Durect, it'd be a gigantic blow. Fittingly, Pain Therapeutics and Durect shares imploded by 50% and 34%, respectively, on Friday.

  • [By Jessica Alling]
